Breastfeeding in Northern Ireland; online support group

Breastfeeding in Northern Ireland (BFNI) is a facebook group for Breastfeeding support and celebration

BFNI offers Mother to Mother peer support, moderated by a team of passionate admins, many of who have extensive training and personal experience of breastfeeding. BFNI now has more than 8,000 members who provide answers to questions, solidarity and support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Breastivillians will be invited to add to their “thank you for supporting me” and “if I could go back” (what would you tell yourself about breastfeeding?) to a tree display.

SureStart support for families

Surestarts across Northern Ireland offer a range of family support services including face-to-face breastfeeding support through local groups. Come meet some of the team and find out about services they offer. Support groups across NI are listed here

Local maternity units

Come and chat with representatives from local maternity units about options for your care in pregnancy and birth, new and existing midwife-led facilities and breastfeeding support offered all for FREE through our wonderful NHS.

Peer Supporters

This is your chance to come and meet some of the wonderful women who have trained to offer one-to-one peer support to other Mums in their local area. Peer supporters are volunteers who have fed their own children and undertaking training in breastfeeding support. They freely give their time to help other women to reach their breastfeeding goals - whatever they may be.

La Leche League

La Leche League (LLL) is a voluntary organisation which provides information and support to women who want to breastfeed their babies. La Leche League of Ireland holds informal, friendly and welcoming monthly meetings in Belfast, Maghera, Carrickfergus, Portadown and Enniskillen. It is helpful for mothers to come along while pregnant to learn about breastfeeding, and reassuring to attend after baby is born. Babies are especially welcome at meetings. Each Group has a lending library of books and leaflets on childbirth, breastfeeding and parenting which is available to anyone attending meetings. They also give talks at antenatal classes, sit on breastfeeding committees and are available as a reference source for medical professionals. La Leche League also provides information and experience for women in special circumstances (premature babies, multiple births, babies with cleft of the soft palate, babies with Down’s Syndrome and many others).

Northern Ireland meeting details can be found on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/lllni and website www.lalecheleagueireland.com. Our helpline is 02895818118.

Code Monitoring NI

"The code" refers to the International Code on the Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes. The Code was created partially in response to the predatory marketing tactics of Nestle in the 70’s in areas of the world where switching to formula without an adequate supply of the product or clean water had devastating impacts. It was created to protect parents and babies from this predatory marketing, so that they may be free to make informed decisions and be supported in them. The code is still very relevant today in Northern Ireland where predatory marketing affects us all, from undermining women's decisions around breastfeeding, direct marketing to health professionals and pushing up the cost of formula through huge marketing spends. Maria and Claire will be on hand to explain why the code still matters today and what we can do to support it.

Human Milk Clothing and Accessories

Imagine if ads for the science of breastfeeding and human milk were common on mainstream tv. Imagine if healthcare professionals, policy makers and our wider communities all fully understood the value of human milk and breastfeeding, and that every mother who wants to breastfeed received every bit of support she needs to do so...

That's our dream. Our non-profit Clothing and Accessories brand 'Human Milk' aims to invest in producing and screening ads on tv after our first one reached over 6 million people online, to invest in a bank of multi-media educational resources that anyone can access and use for free, and in community organisations supporting mothers on the ground. Our clothes are easy to breastfeed in, super soft, super sciency, and beautifully designed. We hope they give you a sense of being cared for and a sense of belonging to a wider village. Every step of the production process is certified as being responsible and ethical, to make sure no-one is exploited in the process, including Mother Earth.

By buying our Human Milk products at Breastival, you are working with us to make all this happen. Can't wait till Breastival? Shop online https://shop.human-milk.com/

Sawdust & Rainbows

I’m Rosie and I am a mother who has been inspired by her child to make items that fuel his passion for climbing and open-ended play. My climbing frame range is derived from Emmi Piklers theory of children’s development- basically a child learns in their own time. The frames are amazing for free movement and that can have a long-term impact on the baby’s spirit, intelligence, and physical being.
One of the frames I make can be folded for easy storage, perfect for smaller spaces and all the items are CE tested, use non-toxic colours and dyes and made from sustainable wood sources and can be used from birth to a max weight of 50kg
My products are perfect to challenge and encourage children and that has such a positive impact on caregiver-child relationships, as your ‘no, get down from there’ changes to ‘yes, you can do it! Well done!’
My website is www.sawdustandrainbows.com and I can be found on Facebook and instagram for new product announcements!

Precious By Kerry

I’m a work from home mum to 3 beautiful baba’s (one of which is 18). I studied for my Masters in fine Art at the University of Ulster Belfast. Then studied teaching at UU Coleraine and now teach part-time at Bloomfield Collegiate while juggling my home life and busy business.  Precious grew from my inner control freak wanting to create my own piece of bm jewellery, nearly 3 years ago! It really grew organically from there and crazily I now create beautiful celebrations of life, experience, and memory with clients all over the world. I simply love what I do and feel so privileged to be part of these Precious moments. Every piece I make is handmade with love in keeping with the love from which it came
